This originally started as a tank model for a course at Digital Arts and Entertainment. Two years later, with a lot more experience, I decided to rework the tank because I wasn’t quite happy with it and figured it would show how much I grew the past years.
The things I worked on first was improving the model itself, it was way too low poly for my liking (cylinders that were supposed to be round were actually 8 sided and so on). The second problem, the biggest one but easiest to fix, was the unwrap. Where this one has a texture set of 3 4k textures, the original had 6 texture sets! This was every material was a different texture and I didn’t know how to make it all part of one texture at the time (the secret is vertex colours by the way). Last but not least I reworked the materials themselves. The noisy textures were replaced with more fitting ones and ofcourse mud to give it all a bit more story (which you can also see with the impact spots and markings).
The original model was made in 3DS Max 2017, updates were done in Blender and texturing in Substance Painter. The final renders are all Real time, this in Unreal Engine 4.
The mud texture for the ground is the same one as you can find on my portfolio.
